She and Dad didn’t seem as concerned as me, so I tried to act like an adult. “I’m all right. The police came and asked questions. They ran over the railroad tracks looking for the robbers. ” I thought they’d ask me more, pull the minutes out of me. Malini was outgoing, attractive and bright. Her silk saris shone like brilliant gems and her smile accentuated striking cheekbones. ” she asked me. ” She winked at Randir. Later she served him his favorite Indian dessert, thick lime sweets covered with silver foil. Randir and I met John and Elizabeth, a British couple at the club. John was almost finished with an assignment for a company that manufactured and marketed air-conditioning systems and would soon transfer to the States. We swapped phone numbers, but not before Randir asked John about marketing positions.

I ran to our front bedroom. “Randir,” I exclaimed, “Wake up. ” He promised to talk to the landlord as I slipped on a green jumpsuit and ran off to work. Ten hours later, I returned home. Randir folded his reading material on the square kitchen table. ” I asked while putting my purse next to The New York Times. “He said he put poisonous bait in the storage area. The rat must have gotten thirsty after eating it. ” “Great. I hope that doesn’t happen again.
