On the other hand, the familiarity of icons depends not only on user’s domain experience but also on his or her cultural background. As part of the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) biometric usability research, the usability of a set of twenty icons designed for fingerprint scanning systems was evaluated in Taiwan. These icons represent the functions and state status of interacting with the system, such as (1) ready state, (2) fingerprinting on the platen (scan index finger and scan fingers), (3) start capture (start capture, start fingerprint scan, and start iris scan), (4) wait/hold, (5) press more/less, (6) acceptable/unacceptable capture, (7) retry, and (8) give up/exit (see guard, give up, and exit).

The answers that matched the intended meanings (IM) are bold with gray background. For example, the first row in Table 3 is read as: Symbol (a) with an intended meaning of 7, ―fingerprint scan‖, had most (26%) of the participants correctly matching it to 7, a lesser number (19%) matching symbol (a) to 8 ―scan index finger‖, 15% of the participants identifying it as 5 ―scan fingers‖, and so forth.
